When the Air Sings of Summer The Old Maid and the Thief
James Myers, baritone, sings the opera aria, "When the Air Sings of Summer" from the opera, "The Old Maid and the Thief" by composer Gian Carlo Menotti. English subtitles of the sung English text have been edited into the video. Joy Mentzel on Piano. Thanks for watching! www.jamesmyers.com
The Old Maid and the Thief is set in a small town somewhere in the United States during the late 1930s in the guest bedroom of Miss Todd's house. In the opera, an elderly old maid, desperate for male company, takes in a beggar and wanderer who turns out to be a thief. She won't let go of him, going so far as to steal liquor (to avoid the shame of being seen buying it) to keep him happy. The restless Bob is alone in the room he has been occupying, packing his bundle and preparing to leave. Eventually he elopes with Laetitia, Miss Todd's maid, and together they rob the old woman.

I love it, you have the beast DNA. I can see you playing Jean val john from les mis or Tevye from fiddler on the roof.
You are so kind, thank you! I had such a wonderful time playing the Beast and would happily do it again if given the chance. I think I would enjoy doing any role in Les Miserables and Tevye is of course a wonderful part from a beautiful show. Thanks again for watching and for your kind words!
@@jamesmyersvoice When you played the beast, was it collage or community theater ?
@@Pianorockstar_ City of Fairfax Theatre Company :)
I’ve started piano lessons back in 2012 still with it. The hardest part is changing hand placement.
Dang that guys GOOD dude
Thanks so much for watching and for the nice comment!
@@jamesmyersvoice ofc I’m learning this song my self! I became a thespian a few days ago so I thought I’d watch some plays and this song stood out to me!!
Nice vid! :D I'm hust sitting here asmiring your voices and trying to listen very carefully to the advices since I've got the range if like A2 - A3 with chest voice but I SOUND like a tenor (or like a young man). After A3 I flip into a very very weak head voice and I'm so sad because I can't figure out to do about it. Also I've always got like a yelling timbre, which can sound nice at certain moments, but not always. That's why I'm so interested in a mix because I think it will give or teach me more of that "singing tone" that I'm looking for. Do you perhaps have any tips on how to develop/find/feel a mix for me? Right now I believe my bridge is very low and my chest very "yelly" since I haven't worked with a vocal coach that can help me inform what it should feel like when singing a type if way. 😬🥲
The piano sound drowns out the singing. Next time please put a mic near the singer.

👏👏👏👏
Thanks so much!
I love it 😊
Thank you so much!
Funny thing I'm actually playing the beast in my schools musical, and I came across this video as I was studying the ways my character acts and behaves in the sights of others. I would have to say this is one of the most helpful videos I've come across so far, so thank you for posting this.
Thank you so much for your kind comment. I'm so glad to hear that you found this video helpful! I'm sure you will do a terrific job in your production. The beast is such a gratifying role to play and I'm just thankful I had the chance to do it. Enjoy the experience and break a leg!

You have very good vocal technique, thanks for uploading videos. Greetings from Madrid 🙂
Thank you so much! Warmest greetings to you from the United States of America :)
Fantástico 👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much!
I honestly didn’t know this was considered belting o thought this would be just normal singing vs speech level singing like a pop singer. When I used to take lessons I was very intense , frankly I didn’t think it sounded great but I had to sing almost like a controlled yell. I fee my teacher didn’t give me awareness of my skills. Within 6-7 months I was hitting f5 as a male and belting and singing songs from many rock bands and I thought I wasn’t very good, yet I look at how some say it takes them years to develop their voices or belts apparently and I did it very quick it seems. I loved singing “burn it down” by linkin park , so satisfying. Frankly I want to learn to sing quiter, there isn’t a lot of style in belting I feel, I feel it’s easier to sound stylistic with less intensity. I don’t know where to find a teacher competent in that or helping me develop style. I felt like my voice was too “safe “ sounding. It was nice like hers, clear and open but I found myself adding rasp and o guess what you would call vocal breaks to add some character. I also hurt my ears being so loud especially practicing often in a car
You only explained the effekt, in hearing the difference between an less healthier and a healthier tecnique. But I came here to understand how the healthy belting tecnique works (in biology).
Great!
Thank you so much!
Well done
James is the star, nice vocals!
Nice performance! Keep it up!!🎸
Thank you so much!
Good technique👏🏻
Thank you so much!
Ive been looking into pieces to perform for a competition and wow i am sold. This was incredible and so haunting. I would be so proud of myself to convey just an ounce of the terror that you do. Incredible job
Thank you so much for your incredibly kind comment. I'm so glad you enjoyed the performance. It's an incredible piece and I wish you joy and success in your study and performance of it! Best wishes!
A great voice of the beast from the person played the song
Thank you so much!
@@jamesmyersvoice your welcome
This person who played the role of the beast is really a gentleman
Thank you!
It's nearly 5 minutes into the video, not sure what I m supposed to be doing.
Wow, she can sing! Thanks for the video. I trust you, since you can sing really well. If the teacher sings moderate, im not that interested. With so much misinformation out there i have to trust people that can prove themselves.
Thank you so much for your kind comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful. Best wishes!
All I almost hear is someone hammering away on a piano....
Fantástico 👏👏👏
Currently in high school and going to audition for a role in the school's Winter musical. This really helped in trying to sing this song!
I'm so glad you found it helpful! Break a leg at your audition!
Just auditioned and I am confident. But when I sang 'You'll be back" I forgot a part but remember the lines, so I jumped back in to the line "Oceans rise..." The directors there were super super nice. Hoping for callbacks! @@jamesmyersvoice

I still don't get the physiology. By "mix" do you mean she's mixing chest and head? Because opera does that too. Or is mix a third type of voice entirely?

Great video. It would have been nicer if the singer was a little closer to the microphone. so we can hear her a little better over the piano. And it will be great if you could do the same video but with a male vocalist. Thank you. Great video
I think that these two young people did a great job with this performance. They also sang this beautiful song really well. The young man's voice is quite powerful for one so young. They didn't even seem nervous, although I'm sure they must have been. I commend both of them for a job well done.
Thank you so much for your very thoughtful and kind comment. I sang this many years ago as a young man during my final year of high school. I'm very thankful to have a video memory of the performance. Thank you again for watching. Best wishes, James Myers
You're quite welcome James. Tell me, did you pursue a singing or acting career? If not, I hope you do still sing even if not professionally. A choir or choral group would love to have your smooth as silk voice. Best of luck to you in whatever career path you chose to pursue. It's great that you have this video to share with the people you love and who love you. A bit of trivia: Tenor Vic Damone recorded this song back in 1957 and it's on UA-cam. He had a wonderful voice too. Kind regards from a Rodgers and Hammerstein fan.
@@ellenscarborough717 I love Vic Damone and I love his recording of this piece. I am pursuing a career as an opera singer, musical theatre performer, actor and voice teacher. I try my best to stay busy. I'm fortunate to have contracts coming up singing with Wolf Trap Opera chorus in Don Giovanni and Washington National Opera Chorus at the Kennedy Center in a new opera called, "Grounded" by well known Broadway composer, Jeanine Tesori. I've had a few nice solo singing and performing opportunities as well and I hope to keep following this path a bit longer though it certainly has its challenges! Thanks again for your kind comments and encouragement, it is greatly appreciated! Kind regards from another Rodgers and Hammerstein fan.
Beautiful.
Thank you so much!
